The Australian Football League has recently made it publically known that the May 31 game between Port Adelaide Power and St Kilda Saints in China has been moved out of the country as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

3 000+ people have already been killed by the virus and almost 100 000 have been infected, and the pandemic has affected the schedules of numerous international sporting events the world over. It’s from a family of viruses that has never been encountered before, coming from animals, with the first people infected either working or shopping in the Huanan seafood wholesale market.

The Round 11 meeting was scheduled to unfold at the Jiangwan Stadium in Shanghai but will now take place on the 7th of June at Melbourne’s Docklands Stadium. The AFL statement said that the continued spread of the coronavirus, which originated in China in December 2019, has forced them to change the plans around the fourth annual game.

The Commission explained that their team has been monitoring the situation very closely and, under advice from the Australian government, the World Health Organisation, and Dr Peter Harcourt OAM, the AFL’s Chief Medical Officer, they had no choice but to change the date and venue for the match.

AFL Chief Executive Officer Gillon McLachlan described the risk that the coronavirus poses as too serious to be ignored and said that the Commission had no intentions of compromising the health and safety of any of their clubs, supporters, or team members.

Any tickets purchased for the Shanghai match will be refunded.
