Cricket Australia announced that it had closed investigations into Moeen Ali’s claim that he had been called “Osama” during the 2015 Ashes series. The investigation was ultimately closed after no further details could be found on the allegation.

Moeen, who is a practising Muslim, made the claim in his autobiography, of which a small extract found its way into the Britain’s Times newspaper earlier in September. Moeen said that an unnamed opponent had called him Osama during his Ashes debut – a slur that references back to well-known terrorist Osama bin Laden.

Cricket Australia, after learning of the allegation, began an investigation into the matter, explaining that they felt the comment was unacceptable in a professional game. But a spokesperson for the agency has recently stated that they followed up the investigation with the England and Wales Cricket Board, and that their team management had investigated the allegation at the time that it was made. Moeen explained that he had told a few other people what the player had said, and that Trevor Bayliss took the matter to Darren Lehmen.

They further stated that Moeen had decided not to push the matter any further, saying that the player in question had denied making the comment at all, and from that point onward they were not able to obtain any more evidence through their enquiries. The spokesperson confirmed that the investigation into the matter was closed, and that their response had been forwarded on to Moeen.
