Australian Sports Minister Richard Colbeck has pointed out that the biggest issue with hosting the Twenty20 World Cup is not the most obvious one. And it isn’t the travel restrictions that have been put into place to try and contain the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Colbeck has said that Australia is more than capable of meeting the challenge of getting the various teams into the country for the games, but is it worth the effort?
Should we be going forward with the Tournament in the light of the fact that the games will have to unfold with no spectators in the stands? Even if Cricket Australia has to deal with a loss of roughly AU$300 million dollars if things don’t go ahead as planned?
Colbeck stated that he would love to see the Australia vs India Test go ahead this summer along with the T20 World Cup. He said that the teams present far less of a problem than the crowds, with the latter factor posing a major obstacle.
He stated that the difference in atmosphere would be huge, but likes to think that protocols can be built with the cooperation of the players. He said at this point the biggest factors are getting the appropriate biosecurity and quarantine protocols in place to see if the competition can go ahead.
Although the T20 World cup is scheduled to kick off on the 18th of October, India’s tour of Australia is set to begin with a T20 Tri-Series in October and will end with a four-match Test series in December.
