While England captain Joe Root has admitted that the national side has much to prove in the Caribbean later this month, he is insisting that he remains the right choice to lead in the Test series.

Root spoke ahead of Tuesday’s Test against the West Indies in Antigua and provided an outline of what he referred to as a “reset” for England.

Despite England’s disastrous Ashes series, with an unbelievable single win out of 14 games played, Root continued to enjoy the necessary backing for leading the team forward. But since an entire new management structure is due to be appointed for the national side, his position as captain now hangs precariously in the balance.

But according to Root, the Caribbean remains the perfect opportunity for England to prove a new start and turnaround in performance. He also said England remains more than capable of reclaiming its position as a world leader in Test cricket.

He said for as long as he remains the right man to lead the team forward and hopefully to a recovery, he’ll remain committed to achieving exactly that.

Root also commented on the return of Ben Stokes to the side, as well as the all-rounder’s decision to withdraw from the Indian Premier League in an attempt to focus fully on Test cricket. Root said the decision is proof again of just how much Stokes cares about the team and about helping England make a comeback as a winning side.
