On the 29th of February 2020, the Melbourne Cricket Ground conducted the historical opening which revealed the landmark transformation of the Australian Sports Museum. Martin Foley, Victorian Minister for Creative Industries, was joined by Chief Executive of the Melbourne Cricket Club Stuart Fox to open the Museum officially to the public.
The new building was redeveloped with an AU$5 million investment from the Victorian Government and it has been a year in the making. It proudly boasts a section devoted to Australian Football with an Interactive Hall of Fame and hosts the largest collection of sporting memorabilia in the country.
This includes the baggy green cap worn by Sir Donald Bradman in 1948 in the last Test he played for Australia, the memorable running suit Cathy Freeman wore at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, and the cauldron from the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.
The upgraded space also includes a revamped educational zone for scholarly groups, new characters for the popular Pepper’s Ghost holograms, and a state-of-the-art gallery which celebrates the best of Australian sporting culture.
With over 140 000 people from Australia and the rest of the world visiting the Museum or taking a tour of the MCG every year, the new facility is set to increase fans’ likelihood of visiting The G in Yarra Park. Minister Foley quite rightly said that there is no place in the world like the Melbourne Cricket Grounds and no better setting for the story of Australian sport!
