Australian Sean Abbott will be playing for Derbyshire for the first half of the 2020 season. He is expected to be available to ten County Championships games, along with the Vitality Group stage events. Since Abbot first made his debut for New South Wales in 2011, the player has claimed a total of 137 wickets in 50 matches, with an average of 33.10. He took 37 wickets for the 2018-19 Sheffield Shield season with an average of 22.29, which included six in their final against champions Victoria.

For Twenty20 cricket, Abbott has 91 wickets in 70 matches for the Big Bash League, the Sydney Sixers, the IPL with Royal Challengers Bangalore, as well as Sydney Thunder. His contribution to the sport mean that he’s the second highest wicket taker in the 2018-19 BBL with 22 dismissals. He has also featured in three T20 matches as well as one ODI, all of which took place in 2014. He recently received a recall to the national squad for their tours into Sri Lanka and Pakistan, but has not yet added this to his career statistics.

Talking about the move, Abbott told reporters that he is excited to join Derbyshire and have the chance to play county cricket with them. He added that it is a good mix in the squad and that he wants to lead them from the front and help the younger players develop their talent while also achieving success for his new team.
