Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton is practically unemployed owing to what appears to be a contractual snag with Mercedes and team boss Toto Wolff.

Hamilton currently still remains out of contract after his previous contract with the leading F1 team came to a close on December 31^st, 2020. And even though the world No. 1 had treated the expiration of the old deal and signing of a new contract as something of a mere formality, with a new two-year contract valued at a bulldozer $70 million (that’s per year!) hinted at as being already on its way down the negotiations pipeline, it now seems as if those negotiations have hit a major hurdle.

Wolff recently revealed that lawyers for both parties are working round-the-clock at trying to return the “many curveballs” being hurled at them from all angles. The Mercedes boss and star driver have apparently been arguing over Zoom – what with Wolff currently stationed in Austria and Hamilton in the United States. Wolff late last week alluded to the fact that even though he hoped that the negotiations would at some point or another be concluded and a new contract finalised, he and Hamilton were approaching the negotiations from two different corners.

The Mercedes boss was however quick to add that the pair enjoyed a solid relationship with a firm foundation from having enjoyed many successes as a team. He said that he hoped that this would remain the case in the future.

Wolff also stressed the fact that Mercedes will not be using George Russell as a leverage for getting a better deal out of the British champion. He also dismissed several rumours regarding Hamilton’s demands – including that of a free Mercedes One hypercar and a share of annual prize money.
