John O’Shea is rallying. The trainer is now celebrating two winners at Warwick Farm, a double which takes his tally to 10 for this year so far thanks to the fact that he kicked off 2020 with three winners at Randwick on the 1st of January. It’s safe to say that he is steadily re-establishing himself after leaving Godolphin, the international Thoroughbred breeding operation and horseracing team, in 2017.
Broadside Armour was the first of the horses trained by O’Shea to win when he took first place in the 1400 metre Darley Maiden. He was a favourite, so there was no real surprise there, but spectators were caught off guard when All Saints’ Eve claimed victory in the Mode Handicap as well.
The filly is being raced by a group that includes Mark Chittick, owner of the world-renowned, record-setting Thoroughbred nursery Waikato Stud, who stood her sire Sacred Falls, the dual Doncaster Mile winner. Sacred Falls unfortunately passed away in December 2019 due to a liver condition. It was his fifth season as a stallion. O’Shea said that all of Sacred Falls’ progeny are lovely, relaxed horses.
All Saints’ Eve was ridden by Tom Marquand, the English jockey spending his second northern winter in Sydney at O’Shea’s request. The trainer describes Marquand as an incredibly strong rider who’s done a lot of work on the horse and he says he wishes he could find a way to make the jockey stay!
