Novak Djokovic wants to play in the 2022 Australian Open. This according to tournament director Craig Tiley, who revealed on Wednesday that a small number of players would be permitted into Melbourne Park without proof of vaccination. In all such cases, medical exemptions would apply, said Tiley.
The tournament chief stressed the fact that everybody at Melbourne Park will either be vaccinated or have an approved medical exemption noted on the official Australian Immunisation Register. He said this position provides the organisers of the event with an extra level of reassurance and safety.
Tiley reportedly spoke to Djokovic on the weekend, but still does not know whether the world No. 1 has qualified for a medical exemption certificate. And unless the nine-time Australian Open champion chooses to reveal this information to the world himself, nobody will ever know.
The Serb has repeatedly refused to make known his vaccination status.
Tiley said this week Djokovic will only “show up” under one of two conditions: he’ll either be vaccinated or carry a medical exemption. He said Djokovic had the choice to keep his personal and medical information private, and will not at any point be asked by organisers to reveal that information.
The tournament chief also revealed that all players will this time round be staying in Crown Towers. Testing will be performed on site, he said, while adding that players and their entourages will at all times be kept separate from fans and the general public.
