Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has claimed his first ATP title since 2017 after beating fellow French player Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4 6-2 at the Open Sud de France in Montpelier.
Herbert, who is seventh seeded, was hoping to win his first singles ATP title, but Tsonga only dropped a total of four points on her serve, which comes as a hard blow for Herbert who has won all four of his Grand Slam titles in the doubles, and was looking to break into the singles. The 33 year old was only in Montpelier thanks to a wildcard. His last title victory was in October in 2017 where he was playing in Antwerp.
Herbert comes off of beating beating former champion Tomas Berdych 6-2 7-5 in his previous match for the build up to the final against Tsonga. Tsonga, who was in line for his 17th career title, beat Radu Albot of Moldova 6-1 6-3, despite dropping his serve only once, and breaking Albot’s a total of five times. Tsonga has been going strong after dealing with a knee injury from the European Open.
Elsewhere, British Cameron Norrie lost to Brazilian Rogerio Dutra da Silva for the final qualifying match of the Argentina Open, which is being played in Buenos Aires. Despite winning his first set 7-6 (8-6) Norrie lost the second set tie break 7-3 before Da Silva won the final 6-2.
For the Sofia Open Final, third seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia beat Hungarian player Marton Fucsovics 6-4 6-3.
