Celebrated Melbourne Storm player and captain Cameron Smith is expected to soon announce his retirement from professional rugby league. Word on the street is that the 37-year-old intends to permanently retire at the end of the 2020 rugby season.
The retirement rumours have sparked mixed reactions, with rugby league veteran Mark “Spudd” Carroll having expressed the hope that Smith will reconsider the decision and next year join the Broncos instead. According to Carroll, who said he considers the skipper a “fantastic human being” a retirement right now would be a major loss for the sport in general. He said Smith must be convinced to stay in the game for another year.
Smith has enjoyed an incredibly successful professional career to date. He scored 47 tries in the 428 games played for the Storm – along with a successful 42 games played for the Maroons in State of Origin, and 56 Tests played for the Kangaroos. He has only ever played for the Melbourne Storm in the NRL and has captained the side since 2006. Storm under Smith’s captaincy won two NRL premierships – one in 2012 and the other in 2017.
The celebrated skipper’s career has been constantly in the news all season long because of his team having included loan player Harry Grant and Kiwi ace Brandon Smith on their roster for next season. Either or possibly even both would likely have switched clubs in the event of Smith having decided to stay on for one more year.
