On Tuesday the 28th of April, the World Players’ Association undertook a mass conference call to talk about how COVID-19 has impacted sports men and women around the globe. 70+ representatives from AFL, Cricket, Rugby League, Netball, and all the Major American sports participated.
Topics like the risks associated with a return to sport during the novel coronavirus pandemic were discussed and negotiations went on for just under an hour. The decisions reached here are what will be guiding the AFL Players’ Association and the Australian Cricketers’ ASsociation upcoming approach to reintroduction just as it will define the course that the American Baseball, NBA, and NFL unions pursue.
Led by Australian-born Executive Director Brendan Schwab, the call was the second of its kind to take place in the last week and AFLPA boss Paul March was present for both. Schwab explained how expensive getting going again during the contagion will be and stated that it needs to be safe and viable for athletes’ return.
Key medical and scientific aspects relevant to a return to play were also worked through, and a focus is being put on players’ being included at every level of discussions. Global bodies like the World Health Organisation and the International Olympic Committee are being included and Cricket and Football players are demanding greater financial clarity from their governing bodies going forward.
The AFL and AFLPA managed to renegotiate their collective bargaining contracts in just 10 days recently, but the ACA is still waiting for financial modelling information from Cricket Australia.
