Kyrgios Advances to Second Round of Japan Open
Australian world tennis star Nick Kyrgios has advanced to the second round of the Japan Open. The sixth seed swept aside American qualifier Ryan Harrison in straight sets despite the heat, drama in the stands and a medical timeout. Kyrgios started the match well, playing his own game and giving the American a bit of run around. As the heat soared, Harrison was able to hold his serve and force the first set into a tie breaker.
As the first set was heading to a close, play was suspended as someone in the grandstands had fallen down the stairs. Kyrgios, who is often criticised for his somewhat volatile behaviour made sure to send water up to the injured fan. Play resumed with Kyrgios claiming the first set 7-5. The second set was a more one-sided affair the sixth seed taking control over the match.
With the finish line in site, Kyrgios had to take a medical time-out when he momentarily lost feeling in his fingers. The trainers came on to have a look at his right arm when he complained of nerve pain. Speaking to the press, Kyrgios said it was nothing serious. He had felt it the day before serving in wet conditions with heavier balls. Resuming play, the Australian wasted no time in closing out the set and winning the match 7-5, 6-2.
Duckworth Joins Kyrgios in the Second Round
Kyrgios will next face the more experienced Czech Radek Stepane who dispatched Frenchman Stephane Robert in straight sets to set up the meet. Meanwhile fellow Australian James Duckworth has also advanced to the second round. In his opening match against Feliciano Lopez, Duckworth was on the ropes for a while as the eighth-seeded Spaniard held a match point in the second set. The determined Australian held his serve to save the second set and eventually break even at one set all.
In the third set, the Spaniard lost control of the game and seemed to be struggling. With play at four games to two, Lopez called it quits and withdrew from the match citing injuries. Duckworth will now face Juan Monaco who defeated the American Taylor Fritz. Despite a great start by the Aussies, John Millman has lost his opening round match to seventh seed Roberto Bautista-Agut. The Australian put up a brave fight, eventually losing 6-4 3-6 6-3.
