The Czech Republic has won its six Fed Cup title in eight years as Katerina Siniakova claimed a 3-0 victory over the United States. Siniakova saved two match points over the course of the game, and then took a second of her own to take the victory 7-5 5-7 7-5.
The win, which Siniakova took four hours to complete, has given her home team a 3-0 lead in Prague. Along with Barbora Strycova, Siniakova has won the opening-day singles games.
The U.S. were hoping to become the first team to come back from a 2-0 deficit in the Fed Cup final, but 19-year-old Kenin was not able to make use of her opportunities during 5-4 to keep the tie going. Kenin was caught off-guard when she pulled a forehand wide on Siniakova’s second match point, allowing the Czech to increase their unbeaten run to an 11th tie, which stretches as far back as 2009.
The two teams, which are the most successful in the tournament’s history, met for the first time in more than three decades, despite both teams entering without their top players. Top-1o ranked Czech players Karolina Pliskova and Petra Kvitover were benched due to illness and injury. Venus and Serena Williams, Sloane Stephens, and Madison Keys were not able to play for their team.
America was led by Alison Riske and Kenin, ranked as the eight and seventh best female players respectively in the country, for the singles rounds.
