SA’s IPL Squad To Miss Bangladesh Test

March 18, 2022 by

South African players due to compete in the 2022 Indian Premier League will not be playing in the country’s Test series against Bangladesh.

While there had previously been uncertainty surrounding the availability (and preferences) of players, it has now been confirmed that the Proteas involved in this year’s IPL will not feature in the Bangladesh Test back home.

Cricketers from several other countries are set to miss the start of the IPL due to other commitments back home.

While SA Test captain Dean Elgar previously indicated that he intended to try to persuade players to remain loyal to their country and complete the Bangladesh series before their departure to India, his plea seems to have fallen on barren ground. According to a source close to the development, the decision to compete in the IPL had been a unanimous one among those bound for the cash-rich tournament.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has in the past endeavoured to keep the IPL window free from international Tests back home. The current situation is an exception due to the extended window created for the 2022 IPL. According to a set agreement between CSA and the BCCI, players are automatically released for competing in the annual IPL tournament.

What this does mean is that South Africa will now be without some of its best players for the Bangladesh Test series. Players competing in this year’s IPL include Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Lungi Ngidi.

The IPL-availability of Anrich Nortje has not yet been confirmed.
