The Matildas had hoped to earn a second-straight win over the United States in the Tournament of Nations while playing at the Pratt & Whitney Stadium, but their hopes were quickly dashed after a 1-1 draw, pushing the USA into the next series of games.
Alen Stajcic’s team were close to completing an upset against the World No.1 team, which would have seen them claim a second win over their long-time rivals. A goal struck in the 21st minute by Chloe Logarzo seemed like it would be enough to ensure victory for the team. That changed after the USA’s Lindsey Horan landed a goal of her own in the 90th minute of the game, which denied three points to the Matildas.
The Australian team were unable to hold on to the end of the game, with Horan’s final back-post score enough to see an end to the Matildas’ otherwise lucky streak so far in the Tournament of Nations.
Despite the USA snatching victory away in the last minute, many feel that Logarzo’s goal was the highlight of the match, and the play that will be remembered the most. The player finished off her counter attack move, which was being lead by Lisa De Vanna, a 137-game veteran. It was a move that pushed the anxious USA to fight back harder, who had already been on the attack throughout the game.
Although the USA has only been met with defeat once before, they will be facing the Matildas for another round in next year’s tournament.
