Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is the latest pro-player to have withdrawn from the US Open.
Kyrgios explained his decision to withdraw as having been a decision motivated by a sense of respect for all those who have died as a result of the global health crisis – which includes fellow-Aussies as well as a massive number of American fatalities. Kyrgios did however add that the choice to withdraw from the competition was no easy decision, and that it was in fact instead a painful call to have had to make.
The player has been brazenly outspoken about what he has described as the “selfish” nature of some of tennis’ biggest sports stars – most notably Novak Djokovic. Several people became ill after they attended a party organised by Djokovic in June.
Kyrgios added that he has no problem with anyone wanting to participate in the US Open regardless of the risks associated with travelling to New York – but that he wanted to remind the tennis world of that which is really important, being the health and safety of others.
The player said that by choosing not to compete in one of tennis’ greatest arenas in the world, the Arthur Ashe Stadium, he would be sitting out for his fellow Aussies, for his “people”, and for all of those who have lost their lives in the US.
Kyrgios is the latest of several professional tennis players to withdraw from the US Open. Aussie and Women’s World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty a little over a week ago became the first Australian player to announce her withdrawal from the tournament.
