Arsenal managed to make a surprising turn around to put an end to their nine match-losing streak while Freddie Ljungberg enjoyed his first win as the interim manager while playing against his former club of West Ham. 18-year-old Gabriel Martinelli made his Premier League debut by side footing an equaliser which he used to cancel out Angelo Ogbonna’s opener while they played at the London stadium.
Within the first nine minutes, Nicolas Pepe had managed to curl a second into the top corner, while Pierre Emerick Aubameyang went on to fire a third. The series of goals turned the game completely around, and all the pressure was suddenly on West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini, whose team had taken four points from their last nine league games, and had to concede three times in three successive home matches. Arsenal’s win was made all the more exciting as before Martinelli had added to the seven goals he had scored in cup competitions so far this season, the visiting team had a string of bad luck.
Officials had spoken about the improved overall atmosphere since the appointment of Ljungberg after he replaced former manager Unai Emery. But despite Ljungberg’s appearance, many feared that the team’s game would end up similarly to their previous two. The Hammers are currently a single point above the relegation zone in the 16th, and will be facing third bottom Southampton, while Arsenal will be moving up two places to ninth.
