Emma Raducanu’s US Open win is a massive opportunity for British tennis, says fellow British tennis star Andy Murray.
Raducanu recently took New York’s Flushing Meadows by storm as she failed to drop a single set on her way to victory and her first Grand Slam crown.
Murray commented on Raducanu’s incredible performance after he on Monday beat Yannick Maden in the first round of the Rennes Open. According to the three-times Grand Slam winner, a lot of people involved in British tennis had known all along how incredibly good Raducanu was. While she hadn’t competed as much as what she might have liked to over the last 18 months, she reminded the world of how good she could potentially be, explained Murray.
Also commenting on Raducanu’s rise to the top had been former British No. 1 Tim Henman. While speaking on Radio Four, Henman said the really astonishing bit about Raducanu is how she’s simply taken it all in perfect stride while only 18 years old. Henman said Raducanu has shown herself a strong and tenacious competitor, and someone with an exceptional talent for performing under pressure.
Raducanu’s performance has changed the entire landscape for British tennis, continued Henman. The former US Open and Wimbledon semi-finalist said considering he himself was still in shock at what had transpired at Flushing Meadows, he “dreaded” to think how Raducanu might feel at this point in time.
Raducanu this year became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam title since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon 1977.
