Trek-Segafredo To Put All Roubaix Riders On Discs

April 2, 2018 by

Trek-Segafredo is planning to equip its full 7-man Paris-Roubaix squad with disc-brake bikes. Just ahead of the race that’s been dubbed the Hell of the North the team has had a full dress rehearsal and are much happier with the brakes than before. The full disc fleet will now race at Roubaix in what has ben a carefully planned strategic move by Trek-Segafredo sport director Dirk Demol and the team’ coaches.

Over the past few years several riders have used disc brakes at Roubaix, but this is the first time a major team has gone into the competition with every member sporting the same equipment. The Trek-Segafredo has a very strong team that includes former winner John Degenkolb, so their decision is not being taken lightly.

A Contentious Issue

Previously, the top favourites in the race were hesitant to use disc brakes, as they were concerned about the wheel change speed and the capability of replacement wheels. Trek officials say that these concerns have been considered ad addressed and now, its full steam ahead for the race.

When asked about their decision Trek-Segafredo said that they had done numerous tests under varying conditions and that they felt disc brakes were the future of the sport. The disc brake debate has been on going for several seasons, but with a team like Trek-Segafredo getting behind them, many more riders may try them out, and the Paris-Roubaix race may yield some interesting results.
