New South Wales is the first state to allow Football games to start up again. This is after they were given the go-ahead from the State Government for training to begin. This is the first time our players will be on the field again since the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic had Australia in its grip.
The news is welcomed even more eagerly because it arrived earlier than expected. It was expected that discussions with government health officials would only take place this weekend, for the announcement to follow on Monday 25 May. Instead, everyone’s now readying for an immediate return to training while they keep working towards the goal of competitive matches recommencing at all levels.
The lifting of the ban only applies to training at this point. A spokesperson for FNSW clarified that no competitive matches can yet be played, including Friendlies as part of training. Everyone has to follow the rules set out in the public health order viewable on the NSW Government website.
Practice sessions are limited to a maximum of 10 people, including coaches, and spectators are still prohibited, from National Premier Leagues to competitions involving Under-6s. It includes a veto on person-to-person contact, like tackling, the closure of changing rooms, and the barring of parents or anyone else watching unless they’re registered coaches or volunteers.
No one’s allowed to mingle before or after practice and everyone has to arrive dressed and ready to get on the field. Players are to depart immediately afterwards as well. All of this is in aid of limiting contact time.
