Team Mercedes F1 champion Lewis Hamilton says that even though he already some time ago decided not to boycott European Grand Prix events, he should not be misconstrued as being unsupportive of those athletes taking part in US racism protests.
He supported the boycotts, said the British six-time Formula one super-star, but believes that protests such as those recently staged by NBA players aren’t bound to have the same impact anywhere in Europe. Even so, stressed the British race car driver, he holds those US athletes standing up for what they believe in – even within their sports – in exceptionally high regard. People are pushing hard for chance, and to Hamilton, the anti-racism movement is an incredible thing.
Belgium, explained Hamilton, is unfortunately not the United States. And those rules applying in the U.S. don’t apply in Belgium. Hamilton has in recent weeks been showing his support by taking the knee in solidarity with all those who have been made to pay with their lives by racial injustice.
Now roughly 3 months after the death of George Floyd, a new wave of anti-racism protests have been ignited by the senseless shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake. Shot and killed by police officers in Wisconsin, Blake was allegedly shot in the back. The incident was captured on cellphone video.
Even though Hamilton says he hasn’t spoken with anyone about the incidents and resulting boycotts, he feels extremely proud to be standing in unity against racism alongside his fellow-athletes. And even though boycotting European events will according to the Brit not result in the desired effect, he committed to speaking to his F1 bosses in an attempt to come up with a plan of action aimed at promoting awareness about the issues currently plaguing the U.S.
