Four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel says he’ll keep competing for as long as he feels the desire in himself to do so.
While the German F1 ace has lived a disappointing time on the track of late, his passion for Formula One racing remains clearly unperturbed.
Before the weekend’s Portuguese Grand Prix, Vettel appeared every bit as excited and passionate about the sport as when he made his F1 debut for Sauber back in 2006. He only two years later became the youngest winner of a Formula One race while driving for Toro Rosso at Monza.
Vettel on the weekend appeared surprised by questions about what it was that kept him going after all this time, especially since this year he’s for the first time racing for Aston Martin, and in a car not likely capable of contending for a spot on the podium. In response to a question of why he felt the need to keep on going, he answered that he would race for as long as he remained in love with the sport.
The German appeared resolve to make another comeback, Lewis Hamilton and his mighty run with Mercedes notwithstanding, saying he wanted to make a return to the front of the grid, and for the very reason that he’d been there so many times before.
There however remained nearly nothing to choose between Mercedes and Red bull during Friday’s practice run at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. The morning’s session saw Mercedes’ Valtteri Botas leading the way at only two-hundredths of a second up on Max Verstappen for Red Bull. And by the afternoon, it would be Lewis Hamilton leading the way a tenth clear of Verstappen, and with Bottas finishing in third.
