2017 Masters Tournament Starts 6 April
Australia’s golfing fans are getting ready for the 2017 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, which promises a diverse field of top golfers and online betting options aplenty.
Unique among the majors, the Masters is always played at the Augusta National Golf Club in the southern US state. It started back in 1934, with the traditional green jacket for the winner awarded since 1949.
It’s sure to attract online betting worldwide, as one of the world’s most iconic tournaments: next to the British Open, it is the tournament sports betting fans are most likely to think of whenever they consider golf. This year, the strength of the field will no doubt add to the betting intensity.
World No. 1 Johnson Worth a Punt
The last time the golfer at the top of the PGA World Rankings won the Masters was in 2005, when Tiger Woods was king of the links. So there will be a lot of interest in Woods’ fellow American and current World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, who might just be in the form to break the drought.
Johnson is now only the seventh player in history to win three consecutive PGA Tour events, after he took the trophies in his last three tournaments: the WGC-Dell Match Play, the WGC-Mexico Championship and the Genesis Open. Many will be backing him to continue his winning streak at Augusta.
Other Golfers to Consider
However, Johnson isn’t the only US golfer who will attract punters’ attention. World No. 6 Jordan Spieth, since he started playing the Masters in 2014, has never finished lower than tournament runner-up. He won it in 2015, and was tied in second in 2014 and 2016. Some golfing tipsters are calling him the man you have to beat before you can win the Masters, so he can never be discounted.
Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, World No. 2, only needs a Masters title to complete his career grand slam, so he can’t be ruled out either. And Australian punters, of course, will also be keen to see if World No. 3 Jason Day can win his first Masters, or if Adam Scott can repeat his 2013 triumph.
