Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios says he’s unsure of what the future in tennis holds after his recent Laver Cup loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas in Boston. Speaking after his singles match lost in straight sets to the world No. 3, Kyrgios said he’s not currently certain about whether or not he’ll continue to play professional sport for much longer.
Kyrgios on the second day of the competition at TD Garden said the Laver Cup would be his last event for the year. He said he’s been travelling and on the road for over four and a half months now and is eager to return home to Australia to see his mum, who is currently in poor health.
The Aussie did add that he had plans for getting his pre-season body right in time for next year’s Australian Open, but that spending time with his family was his priority for right now.
While Kyrgios has slipped rapidly down the rankings ladder since his career-high ranking of world No. 13 back in 2016, he remains one of the few players in the world to have thumped tennis’ Big Three – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. He remains a talented force with his magical shots, and also a firm favourite among fans back home as well as the world over.
Kyrgios said he has nothing left to prove to himself in terms of his career and that he’s especially proud of what he’s managed to achieve. Anything that happens on the court from here on out is merely a bonus, the Aussie explained.
