The plans to expand the 2022 World Cup to 48 teams have been completely abandoned by FIFA>. President of FIFA, Grianni Infantino, in 2108 stated that they decided to expand their teams from 32 to 48 for 2022 and 2026 tournament that’s to take place in Qatar. The change would have required that Qatar share much of its hosting duties with other countries within the region.
The governing body for the world football organisation said that they had completed a thorough and comprehensive consultation process, and that the changes would not be able to be finalised. FIFA had also stated that they were exploring the possibility of Qatar hosting a 48 team event on its own, but ultimately decided against pursuing those plans as there wasn’t enough time for them to complete a more detailed assessment of the logical impact such plans would have on the tournament.
Organisers from the Qatar World Cup said that Qatar had long been open to the idea of an expanded event for 2022 as a viable operating model, and that all parties included agreed that an expansion to 48 teams would be in the best interest for both international football and Qatar. Talking about the plans, they stated that with three and a half years left before it starts, Qatar had committed to ensuring that the upcoming FIFA World Cup would be one of the best ever, and one that would make the Arab nation proud.
